Front-end & back-end Speech Recognition: get the best of both worlds

Yes, in a perfect surgery world, doctors should be able to ‘speech-enable’ the wide array of administrative tasks that fill their working day. From consultation notes all the way through to referral letters, everything should be speech-enabled. But when practice managers start shopping around, they’re often asked to choose between one of two modes:

Voice Recognition

Front-end (or interactive) speech recognition 

That’s when doctors can speak their consultations directly into their computer screen. They can create their own referral letters in real-time and simply print and sign them once completed. The words appear in their clinical system, eliminating spelling errors and saving hours of precious time that could be spent with patients. The same goes for creating emails or browsing the web, they simply speak it instead of typing it.

Back-end speech recognition 

That’s when the doctor dictates as he is used to, the process being transparent to him. The dictation is sent through a recognition engine which is then passed on to the secretary along with the original voice file. Now all the secretary needs to do is correct the text, as opposed to typing it from scratch. Doctors can also choose to correct their own letters later in the day to further save on secretarial resources.

This is all fine, but, why should you have to choose? Isn’t flexibility the real productivity booster here?

By flexibility, I mean:

a) Practices should be able to activate Speech Recognition for certain doctors or referral types only, depending on their specific needs.

b) Doctors should be able to switch between front-end and back-end speech recognition modes anytime.

Digital Dictation, back-end and front-end Speech Recognition all wrapped up within the same solution? That’s the way forward as far as I can see, simply because that’s factoring in the most important aspect at play: the human one. It’s taking into account the fact that doctors have various voice patterns, various comfort levels towards technology, various habits, various preferences and also various workflows to deal with.
