Practice Managers earn more than average

The average wage in the UK in 2013 was £26,500 per annum (for full time workers) according to the Office for National Statistics. Although this doesn’t take into account how difficult the job is, how much work you take home at night or how skilled you are, it is promising to see that hard working Practice Managers earned an average of £26,600, with some groups (based on region and list size) earning  £49,076.

Salaries went up…

The basic salary change between 2012 and 2013 showed a 4.1% increase. This is a positive result when you consider that from 2011 to 2012 survey results actually proved a decline in the average wage by 0.87%.

…but bonuses went down

Practice managers working in surgeries with a list size of over 140,00 in the South East were receiving the highest bonus in 2013 (getting an extra £1,495), while those working in Greater London for surgeries with less than 5000 came home with no bonus. However, figures show a general decrease in bonus, with an average all round drop of -19.8% from the year before.

Partners earn more

Probably not an alarming statistic, but we found that partners earned no less than an average of £48,221. In practices with between 11,000 – 14,000, Practice Managers who became partners were earning an average of £65,250. That’s more than double the average UK wage, and £77,250 less than David Cameron (the other kind of PM).

Somerset and Dorset managers were the highest earners

The South West isn’t only the ideal staycation spot – it was a winner all year round for Practice Managers last year. Those working in the Central area of the South West – including Somerset and Dorset – and in Practices with list sizes of 14,000 and above were earning a higher basic salary than anywhere else once we had done our regional breakdowns. Figures show that they were making £56,485 and coming home with a £2,000 bonus.

Scottish and Northern Irish PMs earn just above average

Practice Managers with a list size of less than 5,000 in Scotland & Northern Ireland had annual earnings of £26,600 in the Central area according to the 2013 survey. This includes Perth and Kinross, Fife, Angus, Stirling, Clackmannanshire, Argyll, Ayr, Renfrewshire and Northern Ireland. That’s £100 per year more than the average wage, but £7,091 less than their fellow managers just a hop over the border in Cumbria, Northumberland, Tyne and Wear, Cleveland and Durham. However, they were still getting a bonus of £283, unlike those in London with the same list size.
